Feature spread analysis (12/6)

The features page looks similar to the table of contents. It always has an artist mainly from the hip-hop or r&b culture. The images are usually mid to full body shots. The artists are wearing high-end clothing, which helps portray the magazine as sophisticated. They also show serious faces to show that the magazine is based on facts.
At the top of the page there's a V to remind the reader that they are reading 'vibe' magazine and it also has small lines to keep the theme of the magazine consistent.

The word 'features' is in a serif formal font but the rest of the text is in a sans-serif font. This helps the title stand out. The main sub-headings are in block letters to also make them stand out, making it easier for the reader to find a specific topic. Specific key words are in italics or in caps to call the attention of the reader and let them know that what they are reading is going to have to do with those words.
The color of the title is different from the rest of the text to also help make it stand out and let the reader know that the rest of the text is going to be about that specific topic.
Next to each page number there's a subtitle in bold and next to them there's names of the people being featured in the text.
Under the picture there's small captions that let the reader know who was the photographer, stylist and creator of the page.

Presentation (12/16)

Magazine history (12/12)

The 'vibe' magazine was shut down for production after the summer of 2009. However, it was renewed by InterMedia Partners and is currently being issued by bi-monthly with double covers. In 2014, the magazine became an online-only. The magazine focuses on multiple issues entertainment- related, focusing mainly on music but also on important topics that are currently going on globally. The target audience is predominantly young and it's driven towards followers of the hip-hop culture.
This can be inferred since the magazine uses artists like Drake and Trey songz who are artists famous and known by younger generations and teenagers.

Magazine analysis (12/8)

The 'vibe' magazine focuses on entertainment issues going on globally. For their covers, they mainly use r&b artists, which helps attract followers from the hip-hop culture. The san-serif modern font and the bright colors used for the masthead allows the magazine to stand out, attracting a younger audience.

vibe magazine table of contents analysis (12/4)

As it can be shown in the pictures the table of contents of the vibe magazine, consistently incorporates the logo of the magazine, which in this case is a "V" in the background of the page. This can help the magazine promote it's brand, as well as help the magazine tie all the elements together.

'vibe' sticks to their dark color scheme to maintain a theme throughout the magazine by using light background colors to make the dark colors of the text stand out. The word 'contents' has a san-seriff modern font, which could attract a younger audience. There's a couple of words in bold, which could mean that they are key words that will help the reader get an idea of what the topic of the magazine is going to be about. The table of contents is divided in three pages, as shown by the 1/3 next to the word "contents" and it comes in two sections:

features and fashion. One page is dedicated to an overview of the most important issues out of both topics. The second page goes in depth for the features and the third page is focused on the fashion section. It's more effective for the reader when they are looking to focus on one specific topic. Some may be more interested in the features section while others may like the fashion section more. Under the sections, there's page numbers and subheadings. Each subheading comes with information explaining what each topic is going to be about.

At the top left corner of the page, there's a 'V' to remind the readers that they are reading the Vibe magazine and it helps maintain a consistent theme. The text is usually at one side of the page so there's enough space for an image of the artist being featured. This helps keep everything organized, leaving enough space for the image and the text. The image is often a full body shot or a mid- shot. This could be done to show the clothing of the artist, referring to the fashions aspect of the magazine.

Hose style project analysis

After analyzing various magazines and their different house styles, I learned a few things that could be helpful when creating my magazine and presentation. For instance, every magazine had a specific feature that identified them as their own, whether it is the color and font of the title, or the image of the cover. Some magazines may even include gifts while others might not and some have anchors while others don't. These small adjustments can help make each house style magazine unique.
To begin with, the ESPN magazine is consistent with the font used on most of their spreads. However, the color of the font might be altered in between red, gold and sometimes white based on the theme that the magazine is trying to create. ESPN does not contain anchors or gifts and their cover image consists of mostly mid-body shots or close-ups of athletes. On the other hand, the Shape magazine sometimes brings a gift and uses anchors with caps to emphasize specific topics that the magazine focuses on-- such as: “Healthy, Happiness, and Body Positivity.” Most shots are mid- or full-body size and all covers keep a natural theme by applying light to no make-up on the model. The background applies to the theme by keeping light colors and an eco-friendly environment. Another example would be the National Geographic magazine, which creates a theme by adding a yellow border along all of their magazine covers. National Geographic, as well as Shape, likes to keep a natural theme on their magazines, typically adding pictures of animals and Earth-related topics on their covers. Although the color of the anchors changes in between white and yellow, they are displayed in all of their magazines covers, adding on to the house style.
Thus, a pleasing magazine house style consists of various components, which include: brand font, image choice (angles, close-ups), anchors, and gifts. Choosing each element builds a theme, leading to favorable layouts that a targeted audience will enjoy.
